The Gauntlet

The Gauntlet

Running through the gauntlet is a great way for players to get warmed up and practice basic soccer skills.

Set Up

Set up cones in a zig-zag formation as shown in the diagram. Separate players into gauntlet runners and tossers. Tossers need soccer balls and position themselves at the cones.

How It Works

The gauntlet runners run back and forth performing a header or volley with each of the tossers. Each time a player makes it through the gauntlet without a ball touching the ground they earn a point. Have players go for one minute and keep track of how many times they make it through the gauntlet without making a mistake. Then switch tossers and gauntlet runners for a new round.

Coaching Points

If a player receives a bad toss, don’t count it against them. Coaches can emphasize different dynamic locomotions while going through the gauntlet. Make sure players keep their eyes on the soccer balls and are performing headers and volleys correctly. Gauntlet runners should wait until the person in front of them has received three tosses to go.
